In FY 2009-2010 $617,974 were awarded to the following 18 programs: Baptist Hospital East: Living Beyond- provides long-term support, psychosocial care, and resources for women living with advanced breast cancer. Baptist Hospital East: Sharing Our Stories- “You have breast cancer!” These are the most frightening words a woman may ever hear spoken to her in her lifetime. Often, the response is to feel isolated and alone. Sharing our Stories is a program that provides immediate support and the relief of isolation. Boat People SOS: Health Awareness and Prevention Program- targets underserved Vietnamese immigrant and refugee women in the Metro Louisville area who lack equal access to education, screening, and care. Through outreach programs Vietnamese women who face multiple barriers to breast health, including lack of culturally and linguistically appropriate materials and service providers will be equipped with knowledge and join the fight against breast cancer. Bullitt County Health Department: Breast Health Education Program- focuses on breast health education and breast cancer awareness for the women of Bullitt County. By providing education on the reduction of breast cancer risks, promotion of early intervention and early detection the health department strives to empower women to make lifestyle changes to improve breast health and improve access to breast health screening. Casting for Recovery: Casting for Recovery Kentucky & Southern Indiana- provides a weekend of psychosocial support and breast health and breast cancer education for survivors as well as exercise, by learning to fly fish, to improve dexterity and the range of motion that is compromised by breast cancer surgery. Family Health Center of Clark County: Breast Screening and Outreach for Minority Women in Southern Indiana- is a program that develops a coalition of agencies that provide services to the low-income, minority women in Clark and Floyd Counties in Indiana. Through a series of special events and health fairs within the minority communities and in cooperation with the agencies that serve the women, the Family Health Center will reach out to inform women of the need for regular mammography. Friend for Life Cancer Support Network: Friend for Life- pairs Peer Navigators (trained volunteers who are male and female breast cancer survivors of all stages and various types) with women and men who have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, in order to help restore a sense of stability during a tumultuous time and navigate the path through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Gilda’s Club Louisville: Breast Cancer Programming- provides individual psychosocial counseling, support services, support networking, and educational workshops for breast cancer survivors and their families. Hardin Memorial Hospital: Lifting Spirits provides education to breast cancer patients and financial assistance for the uninsured and underinsured for pet/ct scans, transportation, breast prosthesis and fitting services, and compression sleeves living in Hardin County. James Graham Brown Cancer Center: The Behavioral Oncology Clinic-Breast Program is a breast cancer-specific psychosocial services program that meets the psychological, social, emotional, behavioral, and education needs of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Their primary service is individual counseling for emotional stress related to breast cancer diagnosis. James Graham Brown Cancer Center: It’s In The Genes- About 10 percent of people who develop breast cancer are related to Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer syndrome. It’s In The Genes identifies, assesses and tests underinsured and uninsured patients at high risk for mutations to ensure that these individuals and family members can be medically managed and appropriately counseled concerning future healthcare decisions. James Graham Brown Cancer Center: Prevention and Treatment of Lymphedema for Uninsured and Underinsured Women Diagnosed and Treated for Breast Cancer- offsets the costs of lymphedema treatment. The goals of lymphedema treatment are to prevent or reduce swelling, restore mobility, prevent infection, psychosocial morbidity, and quality of life in the prevention and treatment of lymphedema, following a mastectomy after the diagnosis of breast cancer. James Graham Brown Cancer Center: Securing the Needs of Uninsured, Underinsured, and Single Low-Income Breast Patients at the Mint Jubilee Resource Center- provides special transportation services, mastectomy bras and prostheses, wigs, and head covers to the uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients. Junior League of Louisville: Keep In Touch- provides access to breast cancer support networks, weekend retreats, and art and movement therapy and is primarily for recently diagnosed breast cancer patients. Kentucky Cancer Program: Cultivando la Salud- provides culturally appropriate breast health and breast cancer education to increase screening and early detection among Hispanic and Latina women in the Louisville Affiliate’s Kentucky service area. Kentucky Cancer Program: Louisville & Jefferson County Partnership in Cancer Control- is a coalition of public health partners that provides clinical breast exams and mammograms at public health centers and community locations, follow up treatment and navigation services, and community-based breast health and breast cancer education targeting women in geographic areas with high incidence, high mortality and low screening rates, including African Americans, non-English speaking communities, and those with low literacy rates. Norton Cancer Institute: Finding Connections Reaching Uninsured Women with Mammography- provides breast cancer screenings and treatment and culturally appropriate education through the mobile prevention center, by meeting the uninsured and underinsured in their neighborhood communities. Norton Cancer Institute: Lymphedema Treatment and Support Garments to Uninsured or Underinsured Breast Cancer Patients- provides comprehensive support education services and distributes lymphedema kits for the management and treatment of lymphedema related medical conditions and their side effects.
Fulfilling the Promise Locally — The Louisville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is one of 124 Affiliates working locally to fulfill the promise of a world without breast cancer. With thousands of volunteers and supporters, the Louisville Affiliate raises money to support breast cancer research and to support services provided to residents of the Greater Louisville & Southern Indiana Metropolitan Area. While 25% of the funds raised by the Louisville Affiliate support breast cancer research, 75% of its funds are awarded in Community Grants to programs serving communities in the Greater Louisville & Southern Indiana Metropolitan Area. Through events like the annual Komen Louisville Race for the Cure and the Pink Tie Ball, the Louisville Affiliate has invested $3,523,464 in Community Grants since 1997. Through the Community Grants Program, the Louisville Affiliate awards grants to non-profit organizations providing breast cancer screening and treatment as well as breast health education to residents in its eight county service area: Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, Shelby, Oldham, and Spencer in Kentucky, and Clark and Floyd in Indiana. The Community Grants Program seeks to reduce breast cancer mortality, especially among those who are disproportionately affected by this disease. Grants are for a 1-year funding period, beginning April 1 and ending March 31.
